Episode 21
Compassion
In today's episode, we are speaking about compassion. What does it mean to have mercy, and why should we be compassionate to others and ourselves. Emotion researchers define compassion as the feeling that arises when you are confronted with another's suffering and feel motivated to relieve that suffering. In Psalms, 103:13, the Bible tells us As a father has compassion for his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.
In the same way, we show compassion to others. We need to do the same for ourselves. Kristin Neff, an expert in the field of self-compassion, describes self-compassion as being made up of three main parts: "self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness." At times we can show compassion to others, but when it comes to being compassionate, we have a hard time showing compassion toward ourselves.
Colossians 3:13 NIV tells us, "Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience." As you can see from the reading above, self-compassion is essential. It is a muscle we have to develop it is one of the most self-care we should and must adopt.
I want to take this opportunity and recommend reading Restoring the Christian Soul by Leanne Payne. Leanne reveals how to overcome the three significant barriers that keep us from becoming a whole person
• The inability to receive God's forgiveness
• The inability to forgive others
• The inability to accept ourselves.
